How important is sunscreen, anyway?

Only a week and a half left before it’s officially summer! What can we do to keep our skin healthy, vibrant and hydrated this summer? Wearing sunscreen!
Wearing sunscreen daily is important
Sun damage is the #1 cause of wrinkles, fine lines and aging. It’s also the primary cause of skin cancer. Wearing broad spectrum (that means it protects your skin from both UVA and UVB sunrays) sunscreen with a SPF of at least 30 will protect your skin against sun damage. It will also prevent dehydration. Picture sunscreen as a protective armor for your skin – it will defend you from the sun’s spear-like rays and keep you safe underneath! So wear sunscreen daily and put it on liberally!
The quality of your sunscreen matters
There are many kinds of sunscreen out there and reading ingredient lists can get confusing. Here’s what you must remember: Mineral based sunscreen tend to be the safest option. On the other hand, some chemical sunscreen ingredients have been linked to increased cancer risk, skin irritation, allergies and hormonal disruptions. While scientists are still debating exactly how much of these chemical ingredients absorbed by the skin is considered safe, we recommend purchasing sunscreens that primarily rely on natural and safe ingredients like Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide. All that said, if you only have chemical sunscreen at home, dermatologists agree that it is better to wear any sunscreen than none at all. But next time you’re shopping for a new sunscreen, pay attention to the label and the ingredients! Your skin will benefit in the long run.
In our store we carry various EltaMD sunscreens. All of them have mineral ingredients as the primary active ingredients. They are safe to use and recommended by The Skin Cancer Foundation.
The best way to keep your skin healthy and young-looking is to wear sunscreen. It’s never too late to start!
